I'm Fish. I write about whatever interests me.

I studied finance and minored in anthropology, then spent two years as an accountant. Accounting taught me a few useful things, mostly that I don't like accounting, so I quit.

I co-founded TxnLab with no real experience in technology. At first, I was simply the business person. Five years later, I understand the technical side well enough to contribute, but I still tend to think about technology through products, incentives, and markets.

I am deeply fascinated by economics, technology, and history. When those things overlap I'm in my happy place. I've never been much of a public speaker, but I've always loved writing. I've held a lot of it back over the years, mostly out of a fear that it wasn't worth reading. This blog is me getting over that. It won't be Scott Alexander, but it'll be mine.

Away from the screen

TxnLab is a lot of screen time. I spend most of the rest of my hours outdoors, mostly fishing, some hiking. It's a useful counterweight, and it's where a lot of this writing gets thought through before any of it gets typed.

The archive

I have been writing online for 15 years, and I wanted all of it in one place I control. The back catalog is here alongside anything new. Everything keeps its original publication date, so the archive reads in the order it was actually written, and each imported piece notes where it first appeared.

I'm on X, and my older work is still up on Medium. There's an RSS feed if you'd rather not rely on an algorithm to tell you when I've posted something.
